WOW。。。 just WOW。。。 I should have expected it to ultimately end that way, but the ride was amazing!Highlights: - Knull is coming and the Avengers have been warned。 Many other heroes and X-Men join in, but when Knull finally arrives, he covers the world in symbiote darkness。 Venom shows up to fight and Knull does two things: 1) Tells him he needs Dylan, not Eddie, and 2) He rips Venom from Eddie and drops him very far to the street below。- Spidey takes Eddie to the remains of the Fantastic Four an WOW。。。 just WOW。。。 I should have expected it to ultimately end that way, but the ride was amazing!Highlights: - Knull is coming and the Avengers have been warned。 Many other heroes and X-Men join in, but when Knull finally arrives, he covers the world in symbiote darkness。 Venom shows up to fight and Knull does two things: 1) Tells him he needs Dylan, not Eddie, and 2) He rips Venom from Eddie and drops him very far to the street below。- Spidey takes Eddie to the remains of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men for healing, then goes to rescue Dylan from where he got stashed。 So many heroes are infected with symbiotes at this point。 The remainder recruit: The Black Tide (from the Mariana Trench); Dracula and the vampire nation; and Fisk goes to get many of the remaining villains。 Thor finally shows up and delivers tremendous damage to Knull, before being stopped。- Eddie dies which causes Dylan to fight back, which turns the tide and allows several of the heroes to shine。 This is where (for me) the greatest moment in the whole book happens。 Full page spread "My name is Jean Grey。 Now。。。 let's see what makes you bleed。" FUCK YES。。。 (My love and adoration for Jean is well documented, not only with my collection but in ink on my arm) Jean discovers that there is an Enigma Force that is the opposite of Knull's Void powers。- Silver Surfer arrives, releasing the Enigma Force, which resurrects Eddie and gives him the powers of Captain Universe。 Eddie, grabbing Surfer's BoardSword, and Mjolnir, makes a huge battle axe and uses it to kill Knull。 He then rips the last remnants of the evil from Dylan。- The symbiotes rejoice at their freedom from Knull and Venom, now rebonded with Eddie, becomes their savior and the new King in Black。I'm thinking things will be different from here on out。。。。 Venom has got a huge power boost。 Really excited to see where the Marvel Universe goes next。 (With the exception of all the Hellfire Gala stuff with the mutants, which I am super pumped for!)Read this。 An excellent ride。 Strong recommend。 。。。more

Lots of fun, great art, even some touching moments。 Also some theological themes of light vs dark。 Glad I had read Silver Surfer Black and Absolute Carnage for some background。 Makes me want to read more of this Venom run。

I really do like the culmination of this series, but I hate how it's collected here。 This book doesn't have the complete story (the rest would be in Venom Vol。 6 which isn't out yet at the time I'm writing this UGH)。 As is, it feels like I just read the summary on wikipedia and missed out on a LOT of key plot twists and character moments。Tldr: either wait until you can get your hands on Venom Vol。 6, or if Marvel decides to release a King in Black omnibus so you can read everything in one go。 I really do like the culmination of this series, but I hate how it's collected here。 This book doesn't have the complete story (the rest would be in Venom Vol。 6 which isn't out yet at the time I'm writing this UGH)。 As is, it feels like I just read the summary on wikipedia and missed out on a LOT of key plot twists and character moments。Tldr: either wait until you can get your hands on Venom Vol。 6, or if Marvel decides to release a King in Black omnibus so you can read everything in one go。 。。。more

Sterling editorial work on this latest Marvel crossover as despite not having read a Venom story for 25+ years I could follow it easily。 I’m dimly aware that the House Of Ideas has introduced a grillion other symbiotes since Venom - fortunately none of them show up here and even the big man spends most of his own mega-event, er, dead。Instead it’s left to the usual heroes to hold the line against Knull, God Of Darkness and his army of undead space beasts in the third Marvel event in a row to invo Sterling editorial work on this latest Marvel crossover as despite not having read a Venom story for 25+ years I could follow it easily。 I’m dimly aware that the House Of Ideas has introduced a grillion other symbiotes since Venom - fortunately none of them show up here and even the big man spends most of his own mega-event, er, dead。Instead it’s left to the usual heroes to hold the line against Knull, God Of Darkness and his army of undead space beasts in the third Marvel event in a row to involve a huge invasion of Earth。 It’s like the plagues of Egypt out there, mate。 Marvel are in a bind at the moment since recent attempts to have events that are actually about something (Secret Empire, Civil War II) have been abominable, but the business demands events so it’s just a succession of massive fights。Still, if you’re going to do a 5-issue fight, there are worse people to handle it than Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman。 Cates keeps everything moving fast and doesn’t over-write, but Stegman is the star here, revelling in the chance to draw a world of goo, glop, distorted bodies and massive teeth。 It’s a version of Marvel that’s more cartoonish and kinetic than usual and all the better for it。 As befits a Venom event, there’s a very early 90s energy to King In Black that at least gives it a different vibe from other recent events - even though it’s functionally identical。 。。。more

EpicThis might be the best event in years。 Eddie Brock is now the King in Black。 What a satsfying ending。

Look, I've been a sucker for Donny Cates' Marvel work since he arrived, but King In Black might actually take the cake。 The culmination of all of his Venom work, it's a big, bombastic, cinematic finale that still keeps Eddie Brock front and centre even as the rest of the Marvel Universe gets subsumed in symbiote goo。Even with everything coming to a head, Cates manages to find a way to throw a few curveballs into the mix。 The revelation regarding the God Of Light that counters the King In Black i Look, I've been a sucker for Donny Cates' Marvel work since he arrived, but King In Black might actually take the cake。 The culmination of all of his Venom work, it's a big, bombastic, cinematic finale that still keeps Eddie Brock front and centre even as the rest of the Marvel Universe gets subsumed in symbiote goo。Even with everything coming to a head, Cates manages to find a way to throw a few curveballs into the mix。 The revelation regarding the God Of Light that counters the King In Black is at once totally out of left field and so obvious that I'm surprised no one's ever done it before, and the end of Eddie's character arc under Cates manages to be a great ending and a brand new beginning as well。And of course, it all looks gorgeous because Ryan Stegman pencilled it all。 I really hope to see him and Cates working together on something else soon, because they know how to tell a story together, it's all very impressive。 Did you really expect me to not to like this? Do you even know me by now? 。。。more

Honestly wasn’t expecting much out of this event。 So it did surpass expectations! And it did make me interested in picking up the new Venom series by Al Ewing。 Aside from that, it was pretty bland。

Good fun。Suitably crazy and entertaining as a follow-up to Absolute Carnage with unexpected tie-ins and a solid enough focus on Eddie and Dylan, the two focal points of Donny's run on Venom。Could it have been darker? More violent/brutal? Sure。Were there a few weak points and things that could have been better? Probably。BUT, I will admit that as events in comics go and big crossovers go (of which we've had far too many in the past 2 decades), this was one I actually enjoyed binge-reading。 CAVEA Good fun。Suitably crazy and entertaining as a follow-up to Absolute Carnage with unexpected tie-ins and a solid enough focus on Eddie and Dylan, the two focal points of Donny's run on Venom。Could it have been darker? Probably。BUT, I will admit that as events in comics go and big crossovers go (of which we've had far too many in the past 2 decades), this was one I actually enjoyed binge-reading。 CAVEATS:1。 The tie-ins oscillated between "damned good!" (Black Cat, Venom, Wiccan/Hulkling, Valkyries, Thunderbolts) and largely meh and "would-have-been-fine-without" (Captain America, Namor, Iron Man/Doctor Doom, Scream)。 So the good ones, for sure, READ THEM!2。 There were some weird tie-ins that you can read or not but I recommend for the entertainment value and cos they were decent: Immortal Hulk, Ghost Rider, The Union, Gwenom v Carnage (this last one being just the wierdest out-of-nowhere comic to be part of this series with no consequence for the main series really。3。 The main series has highs and lows but by far the highs outweigh the lows and though it feels like there was a kind of stale-mating partway in despite things moving at a brisk clip and a kind of marking-time happening when things slowed a tad, overall the short nature of the main series (confined to a tight 5 issues only!) really helped it from becoming a bloated mess as many events have and by the end it all tied together nicely with more than a couple of well crafted surprises in there。4。 The series showed how well Cates knows and has a fondness for writing these characters on whom he focusses + there was more than a little nostalgia thrown into the mix。 It was overall a decent balance。5。 While it was a pretty straight-forward and simplistic series with a healthy amount of bombast thrown in the mix (like Iron Mans efforts in the latter half of the series which should really put Tony's brain in a different place hereafter, I mean c'mon!), I liked that literally no one could fix the problem in any of the conventional ways and the normal Marvel go-to of Reed Richards, Stark, Strange, etc were all basically useless。 It was a Venom/symbiote event through and through。 AND I did not see that ending coming, seriously。I don't doubt people will have complaints and what-n0t but overall I read it, enjoyed the crap out of it and would recommend it to fans of crazy, quirky comics and Venom/Eddie Brock in particular。Compared to 90% of "events" Ive read in the last several years, this ranks amongst the better ones by far - though awkardly it doesn't necessarily beat out Absolute Carnage which was just a heavy-metal mind-freak out of nowhere。If Im honest, for me it's like the battles for Helms Deep vs the battle of Minas Tirith。 The latter was without question, the bigger, the more badass and with the bigger stakes and space to really be crazy-cool to watch, but somehow the smaller, dirtier more close-up madness of the former is almost as good and in brief moments maybe better。Bottom line: Read it。 It's good。 。。。more

This event was really good!It picks up with Knull arriving on Earth and heroes trying their all but they can't stop the lord of the abyss from taking over and multiple hero deaths happen, the heroes and earth itself overtaken by the symbiote and dragons and so it falls on Venom and the Avengers to stop it as Knull has to fight Thor, Silver surfer and ultimately his opposite。 Will Eddie be able to defeat Knull and save everyone? Whatever happened to Dylan? Who is the opposite of Knull? This volume answers all of it and more and focuses on great heroic moments for Eddie and the threat of Knull that has been building for such a long time and its great to see so many plot threats that Cates started way back come to fruition here and the art is freaking insane, you can feel the darkness while reading it and that image of post-apocalyptic coming to your head。 This is Donny Cates love letter to Venom and its okayish in the end and it just like he promised "a big summer event" and he delivers on it, giving such cool scenes, easter eggs and tying it all together in the end! The last couple of years' worth of storytelling of Venom, aka Eddie Brock, have been some of Marvel’s strongest yet。 The introduction of this cosmic god of the symbiotes was an inspired choice, and Knull has officially become one of Marvel’s most deadly foes in years。 The shocking turn of events upon his arrival to Earth hits readers like a ton of bricks。 The evolution of Eddie Brock and the introduction of a powerful new cosmic threat make this a must-read event for Marvel Comics。 The last couple of years' worth of storytelling of Venom, aka Eddie Brock, have been some of Marvel’s strongest yet。 The introduction of this cosmic god of the symbiotes was an inspired choice, and Knull has officially become one of Marvel’s most deadly foes in years。 The shocking turn of events upon his arrival to Earth hits readers like a ton of bricks。 The evolution of Eddie Brock and the introduction of a powerful new cosmic threat make this a must-read event for Marvel Comics。 。。。more

Basically the end of Cates’ Venom run, with only one issue left to go。 It’s funny that this came out around the same time as DC’s Death Metal, as they both had a heavy metal motif。 I thought this was a little more coherent than DM, even while it was kind of a letdown from the hype。 Curious to see where the next writer goes with everything Cates has set up

Kind of a let down, Marvel has built a formula for these rotating crossover events where some storyline building in a solo ongoing series suddenly explodes into a new massive war that is gonna change the Marvel universe FOREVER, and then its the same old drivel all over again。 This time is Knull, he beats the Avengers and the X-Men in one issue, something something DARKNESS, all hope is lost, the planet is doomed, add a bunch of unecessary tie-ins, heroes start getting powers from other heroes, Kind of a let down, Marvel has built a formula for these rotating crossover events where some storyline building in a solo ongoing series suddenly explodes into a new massive war that is gonna change the Marvel universe FOREVER, and then its the same old drivel all over again。 This time is Knull, he beats the Avengers and the X-Men in one issue, something something DARKNESS, all hope is lost, the planet is doomed, add a bunch of unecessary tie-ins, heroes start getting powers from other heroes, crazy new combos, Knull gets beaten, the end。 Seriously, tell me a recent event that has not been like this, there's absolutely no stakes, tension or drama, its one massive war after another, yet nobody ever dies, the world is completely cover in black goo, everyone is being controlled by symbiotes, massive black dragons all over the skies, so what, don't even trip dawg, people are fine, this is Tuesday for them, tomorrow everone are gonna act like nothing ever happened and all the buildings are gonna be back where they were before。There was no need for King in Black to happen so soon after Absolute Carnage, the only time it really works is when the story focus on Eddie Brock, he's the only thing Donny Cates gets right, he turned Venom into a powerhouse and he's easily one of my favorites right now。I'm going to give this one three stars, only because the core series was ok, but I recommend everyone to skip all of the tie-ins (except Venom's), they add nothing to the experience, and some are just borderline trash, like Iron Man and Dr。 Doom battling a zombie santa claus in the middle of the war, or this new american Kaiju that growls USA, you've been warned。 Thunderbolts was ok。 。。。more

This whole event is an utter abomination eroded by none other than cliche-ass motherfucking plot holes and some other dumb shit a 3 year old won’t ever come up with although he certainly understands it thoroughly。 The writing is trash and the event should be decanonized so Marvel could maintain a little reputation it may still have。 However I like the last book。 Really impressed。

Ryan Stegman killed it in the interiors。 The art was superb。While I was never a big fan of Knull, and much preferred the simpler, human story Cates was creating with Eddie and Dylan, Cates still managed to turn this around and make something special out of it。 Marvel cosmos is complicated and confusing, but I hope people who are into that enjoyed Cates’ tinkering with it。 And I’m sure they will。 I think because I preferred the more human elements of this venom run, I enjoyed Absolute Carnage mor Ryan Stegman killed it in the interiors。 The art was superb。While I was never a big fan of Knull, and much preferred the simpler, human story Cates was creating with Eddie and Dylan, Cates still managed to turn this around and make something special out of it。 Marvel cosmos is complicated and confusing, but I hope people who are into that enjoyed Cates’ tinkering with it。 And I’m sure they will。 I think because I preferred the more human elements of this venom run, I enjoyed Absolute Carnage more。 But this was still a fun treat。 。。。more

(The Fantastic Four particularly have been hit hard by "Event Fatigue" adn unneeded crossovers。。) 。。。more
